A loving relationship can be truly wonderful when it works. We feel seen, understood, and almost intoxicated by love. Especially in the beginning, it can feel like our partner has everything we’ve ever dreamed of.
Over time, we start seeing the relationship with new eyes. We discover new aspects of our partner and ourselves and challenges we didn’t know existed and don’t know how to handle.
Relationships Are Ever-Changing
Because people and relationships are dynamic and evolve over time. Change is constant throughout life, and as a couple, you need to grow and adapt together, side by side, to maintain a sustainable relationship. This is not always easy.
What you once fell in love with in your partner can suddenly become the very thing you struggle with the most.
The early parenting years and lack of sleep can lead to losing each other along the way. Stress and demanding jobs can also leave you with no energy to nurture your relationship.
Seeking Help in Time is Crucial
Regardless of the challenges, it’s important to care for your relationship and seek help early. Many couples wait too long, which can lead to escalating conflicts.
Couples therapy is for those who want to develop and strengthen their relationship. It can involve addressing issues like major life changes, communication difficulties, conflicts, infidelity, jealousy, or when one of you is questioning the relationship.
It can also involve challenges related to balancing life with children or stepchildren.
Therapy sessions can also focus on getting support to end the relationship on good terms so that you can maintain a healthy co-parenting relationship in the future.
Couples therapy helps you to:
- Increase understanding of each other
- Connect on a deeper level
- Improve communication skills
- Identify obstacles in the relationship
- Build on what already works
- Find new ways to strengthen your relationship
- Become a secure base for one another
Process of the couples therapy
In the first session, you will both share what you need help with. After that, I will meet with each of you individually for a one-on-one session.
Before the individual session, you are welcome to fill out questionnaires to provide a more comprehensive and detailed picture of you both as a couple and as individuals.
In the second joint session, I will share insights from the initial assessment and propose a plan to support you in the best way possible. Together, we will create a plan for the sessions ahead.
It is difficult to say in advance how many sessions will be needed. It could range from 6–10 sessions, depending on the issues you wish to work on.
